Hi Marian, what I always asked
myself since I know Alphaville (1985) is: in spite of
your talent, youšve never been supported by a strong
production, in order to become also a band for the
international charts (excluding the first album). Why?
Thanx anyway for all the beautiful emotions you give me.
...always got the support I wished.
1) Which writer or poet has been most influential to you
?
2) What is your favourite Wenders' movie and can
you explain your choice ?
3) Would you like to play a soundtrack for one of its
movies?
4) In your songs, you often write about dreams...but what
would be your worst nightmare.
1) ...Enid Blyton
2) ...Der amerikanische Freund
3) ...what about the next one
4) ...to have no dreams anymore.
Did it ever happen to you to read your lyrics a longtime
after writing them? Would you like to change a part of
them, or of the music?
...I´m always happy to finish a song. It´s the only way
to get to the next one. Lyrically there exist a lot of
slightly different versions of each song I´ve written so
far. It´s sometimes confusing when I perform them live.
There are a few songs i wish I had never written. But
that chart is ever-changing. Some songs get into it some
others somehow manage to slip out again.
Which song of your past do you love most?
..."Ways"
And which song of your present?
..."Skywriting"
Is there an old song that you donšt want to sing
anymore?
..."Maikäfer Flieg"
Is there an old song that still gives you many emotions?
..."On The Beach"
If you listen to your voice on the radio, what do you
feel?
...still crazy after all these years.
Do you like to answer questions about your interpretation
of some songs?
I hate it. But sometimes it´s better to do the job
oneself than to leave it to somebody else.
What were the main inspirations for the new CrazyShow
songs?
...the brave new world
How did you react when you had to finish a song but
couldnšt find the right words
...I screamed, then ripped off the pages from my writing
pad, crumpled them up in my hands, stomped them into the
ground, smashed a coffe-cup or two and forgot about the
it. Some others didn´t.
Please give a mark from 1 to 10 to all your albums, from
Forever Young to CS.
...oh no, Alex, please! 10 to all????
Hard question: whošs Marian? Is there some
difference between Marian and Hartwig? Marian is a person
or a character?
...Hartwig is a person of character. Marian is a person
of Hartwig.
A twenty years career... what do they represent for you?
...bullet-proof entertainment for those who can stand a
little rain.
Is there something in your personality that has changed
(and got better) during these twenty years?
...I don´t really think a person/ality can change at
all. One (hopefully) grows with one´s experiences.
Do you have a memory, a feeling, an emotion that you
particularly remember?
...constant wonder. Constant curiosity. My constant
companions.
Your voice is warm, charming, intense. What role does it
play in the creation of your songs?
... none. if I had a croaky, uncharming and non-intense
voice I would try to sing them anyway.
Is there someone you particularly would like to thank, in
your life?
Everybody I fall in love with.
Can you say you have a kind of "philosophy of
life˛?
...Yes. But I can´t say that I follow it very much.
What do you see in our world? Whatšs your opinion about
whatšs happening in the world (globalization, wars,
etc.)?
...the world is a fantastic place to be. I love it. And I
am grateful that I happened to grow up where I grew up.
Is there something that has left you a bad mark?
Something that youšd never do again?
...I try hard not to repeat myself. In every respect.
What do you think about Duran Duranšs The
Chauffeur?
...God, what can I say. Brilliant song from long ago.
Makes me really sentimental. Gotta go to my recordplayer
(where is it?) and spin the song (for one last round?)
Whatšs the real reason why you donšt like Universal
Daddy?
...the real reason is that I hate it.
Did you ever think about the possibility to put together
in the band Alphaville Marian Gold, Berhard Lloyd, Ricky
Echolette, Frank Mertens, Rainer Bloss?
...good idea. Lets lock them all up in one room and watch
how they kill each other.
Will you re-release Dreamscapes 1-8?
... I am pretty sure we will.
The structure of The Impossible Dreamšs refrain
sounds a bit like Duran Duranšs Ordinary World.
Is it a kind of homage?
... I wrote TID with Rainer in 1989.
In Euphoria, about after 3 minutes and 10 seconds
from the beginning, therešs a kind of special effect. Is
it a quotation from Japanšs Ghosts?
...I can´t deny that Japan had some impact on the song.
But this "japanesque" influence can be much
better heard on songs like "Paradigm Shift".
